Now That Night’s Begun

NOW THAT NIGHTS BEGUN

Looking out at our backyard mountains, see the storm roll in
First flakes of snow are falling, evening begins
I take your hand we go inside
Time to light the fireplace and to watch the flames climb high
There’s more years to come, darlin’
The smell of the piñon burning, now that night’s begun.

Love’s like a fire that flickers from a spark comes flame
I see you smiling sideways and I feel the same
We sit in silence your hand in mine
Thinking ‘bout our life together growing close with time.
As the years unwind, darlin’
We don’t know what life might bring us, or the joys we’ll find.

As the years go by
With a laugh or a cry
I’m not sure what we’ll do
All I know is I’ll
Be there with you.

The fire is burning low and the wind is dying down
A blanket of new snow that fell without a sound.
You take my hand we go upstairs
Tomorrow’s a new day and we don’t have a care
There’s more years to come, darlin’
The smell of piñon burning now that night’s begun.

I started this song in Dallas on September 24, 2020. I played with it a little, but the lyrics I tried to write just didn’t do it for me. The original title was “The Highway Calls”, which it does, but I was stuck. I let it sit for 3 months, pulling it up every now and then, and I was still stuck. So, one afternoon in December Leslie and I sat down in the living room and worked on it. It has a lot of lyrics. This song actually is autobiographical, at least as much as any of our songs are. The lyrics started with the thought of sitting on the deck in the back of the house, and we took it from there. There sure is a lot of hand-holding in this song. One take that we did in the studio I sang, “There’s more years to come, Leslie” instead of “darlin”. It didn’t make it into the final mix. I love the bridge in this song. Bridges always seem to make me happy.
