The Ashes Blow

The Ashes Blow
Double Drop D Tuning

People fall out of love, I know
As the embers cool, we watch the ashes blow
It seems that love is a mystery
We keep looking, it’s so hard to see

Chorus:
I knew, but didn’t want to say
Goodbye is hard, I knew you couldn’t stay
With me.

We measure time in the hours and days
We decide who goes, we decide who stays
Like grains of sand in the hourglass
My moments with you, now fall in the past.

Chorus:

Bridge:
Time passes, but the darkness stays
Tomorrow’s same as yesterday.
I can’t close my eyes they’ll overflow
No right, no wrong, yeah, so love goes.
For me.

Instrumental verse (no turn around)

Repeat 1st 2 lines of 1st verse

The progression for this song was written months before the melody and lyrics. Leslie and I finished the lyrics and within a few days promptly discarded them. We went back to work and it took about 6 months to finally get this song right. I love the first 2 lines of the song, “People fall out of love, I know. As the embers cool, we watch the ashes blow”. This was influenced by the song “We’ll sweep out the ashes in the morning” by Joyce Allsup. I heard it done by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris on the GP album in the early 1970’s. This is a sad song, of course, but I see it as hopeful as well. I love the drone in this song as it’s in double drop D tuning.
