Wish I Could Fly
Wish I Could Fly
I talk with friends about the hopelessness today
Our country’s on a credit card our kids will have to pay
I don’t know how things ever got this way.
I don’t know how, I don’t know why
Wish I could fly.
Chorus:
Here in the middle, no place to be
If we would open up our eyes perhaps we’d see
Dead in the middle, seems right for me.
I don’t know how, I don’t know why
Wish I could fly away.
Fly away, fly away
I read too much about the people in my town
One half would gladly put the others in the ground
The other half would do the same without a sound
I don’t know how
I don’t know why
Wish I could fly (away)
Chorus:
Bridge:
I was always told as a child
That they would leave a better world for me.
Now it’s my turn, and I don’t want to say
To my kids, what is plain to see
I know I should.
Repeat V1
Repeat Chorus
this song’s chord progression is a cousin to Ventana Wilderness. This is a letter to my kids with my thoughts about the state of politics in our country and their future. I don’t have any answers, which is obvious. This was a bit of an emotional song for me to write because of how much I lament that our kids and grandchildren are going to have to deal with the ramifications of the stupid decisions that the generation before mine, as well as my generation, have made. It’s just a damn shame and I have no solution to offer. The first line of the song, “I talk with friends about the hopelessness today” comes from a conversation I had with Fred Kosak. That conversation led to this song.
