ALL THAT MATTERS (TODAY)

Livin’ near Durango
La Plata’s to the West
Seems the sun is always shining
(Days of work and nights of rest) First Verse
(Days are nice but nights are best) Last Verse

It’s easy being with you
I knew it’d work out fine
Cause love is all around us
In the piñon and the pine.

Evening comes, I can see your eyes
They dance in firelight
The embers burning soft and slowly.
Smiling gently as you hold me

Chorus:
And we’ll decide
If all that matters
Is today…..

The years seem passing quickly
Sometimes I lose my breath.
I’d like to slow the moments
And feel your soft caress

Nights are getting longer
Our candles burning down.
But all our time together
And love is all around.

The simple times I remember most.
Just touching you…..
And the embers burning soft and slowly
Smiling gently as you hold me.

Chorus

Repeat Verse 1

The music was written when I was a Jazz Guitar major at University of Denver in 1976. I love the progression and the chords. I disliked the original lyrics; they were just flat out bad. I updated them in 2017. Leslie and I had a disagreement and a few weeks after that I wrote new lyrics to this song about our life and asked the question, can we decide that all that matters is today? Can we leave the disagreement behind us and move on? The answer was yes, like it always has been. Pro-tip, after a disagreement, writing a song for your spouse or partner actually works.
