Cascade

CASCADE

The San Juan Mountains, against the sky
Aspens whisper lullabies
The sun is shining, I watch the river run.

I hike Cascade up to waterfalls
High in the pine trees (spruce) a Red Tail Hawk calls
I stop and think of everything I’ve done. (Everything to come)

Chorus:

In the evening, the stars appear
The sky at night is amazing here.
A thousand light-years, and I don’t have a care.

I see a cloudburst, it’s not far away
There’s no shelter anyway
But I don’t care cause they never last too long.

Southwest Colorado, is now our home.
Together here we’re never alone
We left Texas, I’m so glad we’re gone.

Repeat Chorus

The main theme for the musical progression of the song was written in about 1973 as a rock band jam. It was very loud and fuzzed out. There were no lyrics then, we didn’t even have microphones. I started some lyrics in about 1974 and started playing it on acoustic guitar. It was very teen-age love angsty – just awful. I continued playing it over the years because it’s a nice progression. Leslie liked hearing it, but I was embarrassed by the lyrics. When I decided to do this project, I started writing some new songs. I wrote new lyrics to this song, which is about hiking up the Cascade Creek Falls trail north of Durango. I added a new chorus to the song, and it was done. Alissa’s twin fiddle part is really pretty, as is the interplay between Fred and Alissa. Every songwriter in Colorado eventually tries to capture what it’s like here, this is mine. I should apologize to my Texas friends. I’m a native Texan! It’s just Colorado, you know?
