(Light Escapes) Darkness Grows

(LIGHT ESCAPES) DARKNESS GROWS

The years passing on in the blink of my eyes.
The laughs and the loves and the memories slip by.
I’ll wait, and I’ll watch as the sun rises low.
And the light escapes as the darkness grows.

The seasons will change and the snow will fall
Cold winds approach and the clouds cast a pall.
A chill in our house as the sun rises low.
The light escapes and the darkness grows.

Our world is coming apart at the seams.
Our children may never realize their dreams.
They’re scared and worried, I tell them I know.
The light escapes, and the darkness grows.

How many years, months or days until my end?
I’m grateful that you are my best and truest friend.
We’ll wait, and we’ll watch as the sun rises low.
The light escapes and the darkness grows.

I’ll wait, and I’ll watch as the sun rises low.
I won’t escape when the darkness grows.

This is a very dark song, written during the “Covid-19 Troubles” of the Summer of 2020. Initially I played it “too happy”, so I’ve slowed it down to make it more foreboding. I didn’t know that this darkness needed to come out of me. This song is about growing older. Yes, Leslie is my best and truest friend. And sadly, I die in the end – but we all do, right?
