Silence
This has been the most difficult song we’ve ever written. Leslie read a book by a Syrian author, Zeyn Joukhadar, and wrote down some of the phrases in it, thinking we might be able to use them in a song lyric. Specifically, “the silence has forgotten us” and “night falls over us, both the same”. This song went through several transformations. Originally, I strummed it, and strummed it pretty hard. Leslie and I worked on the lyrics, we edited them several times, and eventually threw out most of them and started over. We are happy with this song now. To me it’s a very vulnerable song. I play it delicately on the guitar. The silence has grown between this couple for so long that they have forgotten how to communicate, and even though their love is still there they are finding that this might not be enough. Leslie wrote the lyrics for much of this song. Fred plays acoustic guitar with me on this, and Scooter suggested the string quartet. Our song has nothing to do with the book “The Thirty Names of Night” that we took a few random lines from.
