From the Fire

From the Fire

I could see we were headed there
Opened the door to hell and despair
And nothing will be left, to save
From the fire

The darkest of days wind howls all night.
Devils in our home, looking for a fight
The dice, will roll, snake eyes…..
We both lose

Chorus:
Like a shooting star, I watched us fall
You let go and we, lost it all
I can’t hold on               (Last Chorus)
To us                          To you
And our love………. Nothing’s left
When you lied         From the fire

Heat of the flames consuming me
It took too long to set myself free
And nothing
Is left
To save…..
From the fire

From the Fire – I started the progression for this song a year ago, and we planned to take it to Florida and write a song with our friend Lee. We had to cancel the trip and I let the song sit for a few months. When Leslie reminded me that we didn’t have enough songs for a new album she asked what progression I had that we could work on. I pulled this one out and played it for her. She took her notebook up and wrote the main lyrics of this song in 10 minutes. I’ll take credit for the second verse, otherwise it’s Leslie’s. After it was finished I asked Leslie if she had been really pissed-off at me that day. She said no, she hadn’t. She said she’d been reading several books lately that had the word “Fire” in the title, and she drew inspiration from her prior relationships. I breathed a sign of relief. I love Scott’s production on this song also. He had told me a few weeks before this session that he was going to use a loop for the drums in it. 5 minutes before we started recording this song Scott took his iPhone into the drum booth and had Clay Lowder play the first 4 beats and then looped it throughout the song. Clay then played mostly his tom-tom drums on the song, which gives it a pretty ominous feel. Alissa plugged her fiddle into a foot pedal and amplifier. Fred played some demonic electric guitar throughout the song. When we recorded this both Fred and Alissa were VERY loud, and I had to sing hard to make myself heard in my headphones. When Scott mixed this he muted Fred and Alissa a bit. I think Scott’s production matched the darkness of the lyrics. My favorite part of this song is Fred’s lead guitar part pretty much wailing in the background when I sing “the dice will roll, snake eyes, we both lose”. It was difficult for me to sing the word “fire” on this song and to hold it. It’s easier to hold a vowel sound, but I couldn’t sing it “fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiire”. I redid that vocal probably 10 times and ended up settling for what we recorded originally. Scott could probably blackmail me with some of the outtakes.
